Lernico

We build for the people who write IEPs.

Lernico turns state standards and your district's curriculum into IEP goals a case manager can defend, and a director can see across every school.

Our Mission

Seven and a half million students in US public schools have an active IEP, and federal law entitles every one of them to goals tied to the grade-level standards their classmates are held to. In practice, goals are still written against whichever curriculum program a district happens to have bought. Students meet those goals and stay behind their peers anyway, because the goal was pointing somewhere else.

Closing that gap is not a productivity problem. Case managers are being asked to hold state policy, a commercial curriculum, individual student data, and legal compliance in their heads at once, for twenty-plus students each, without a tool built for any of it. We are building the expertise into the tool so it does not have to live in one overworked person's head.

Lernico was founded at KTH Innovation in Stockholm and is built alongside the special education teams who use it. We would rather ship one thing case managers trust with an annual review than a suite nobody opens twice.

TeachersLernico

  • It has made it possible to tailor teaching materials to meet the specific needs of different groups of students.

    High School Teacher

  • Planning has become much quicker, maybe 1-2 hours less per day. This has freed up time for me to focus on developing more creative and engaging lesson plans.

    Middle School Teacher

  • It has mainly provided inspiration for study questions in different subjects. It simplifies things and is a great starting point with questions you can build upon and then develop on your own

FAQ

What is Lernico?

Lernico writes standards-based IEP goals. You give it the student's grade, state, subject, current performance level and the curriculum they are working in; it returns a measurable, legally defensible goal tied to your state's grade-level standard and anchored to that curriculum's scope and sequence. It also handles progress monitoring, parent reports and network-level reporting for directors.

Who is it for?

Special education case managers, the SLPs and OTs who write goals alongside them, and the Directors of Special Education accountable for IEP quality across a district or charter network. It is teacher-facing only. Students never use it.

How do we ensure quality?

Goals are generated against the state's published academic content standards, the district's adopted curriculum, and the requirements that govern IEPs: IDEA, the 2015 OSERS guidance on grade-level standards, and the Endrew F. "appropriately ambitious" bar. You remain the author of record: Lernico drafts, you review and approve.

Is Lernico easy to use?

A case manager gets to a first goal draft without training. The tool asks for what you already know about the student and does the translation into standards and curriculum language itself, so no state-policy expertise is required on your part.
